Against another dove, you will share resources and gain 1 point. Against a hawk, you will flee and receive 0 points.
Against a dove, you win the resources and gain 1 point. Against a hawk, you could win the fight, gaining 1 point, or be injured, losing 1 point.
What is the "prisoner's dilemma"?
The Oxford English Dictionary describes the "prisoner's dilemma" as:
"A situation in which two players each have two options whose outcome depends crucially on the simultaneous choice made by the other, often formulated in terms of two prisoners separately deciding whether to confess to a crime.""
The "Hawk vs Dove" scenario is a subset of this theory. By choosing a "dove" strategy, you minimize your losses, but also lower potential gains, by sharing a limited resource. Meanwhile, a "hawk" strategy is a greater gamble in that while you beat out "doves" at gaining the resource, you risk injury when faced with another "hawk."
